ParticipantGood to have you back! Well, Danny’s done a symphony piece, his son Olliver was born, and he’s got 2 movies officially added to his slate (“Charlotte’s Web” and “A Day With Wilbur Robinson”) and it’s rumored on IMDb that he’s doing “Wonder Woman.” I’m not sure how long you were unable to come here, so just let us know if we need to go further back into the news archive.

ParticipantNow, when you say you’re picking at random, it means you’ll pick me, right?

ParticipantI saw a review of “Haunted Mansion” a while back and I remember the critic in the Boston Globe describing Mark Mancina’s average score as “Elfman-esque.” He’s a big name in Hollywood, not liked by all due to his unique style and the number of good films he’s scored. Critics love the little scores, I suppose.

ParticipantWell! I’m not jumping out of my shoes, but I’m certainly happy to hear that Danny could be returning to the comic book circuit. But unless Ryan has it confirmed (you love that song, don’t you?) this isn’t a very stable report. IMDb hasn’t even listed Joss Whedon as writer/director yet, and Danny Elfman’s name is there first, so how reliable could this be? After all, IMDb does work partially based on submissions, and Danny is still listed as Spider-Man 3’s composer, so the credibility is pretty low. Sure, it would be pretty cool if Danny scored Wonder Woman, but honestly, isn’t he above working for Joss Whedon? I just have a bit of trouble imagining Danny doing a Buffy-esque movie, as it’s been rumored to be like. We’ll see. By the way, I’ve seemed very pissed-off lately on account of the Spider-Man 3 news…I apologize.

ParticipantThis is the story many of us have been dying to hear!!!
This explains the goings-on with the train sqeuence; Raimi wanted a beefier score than the original Elfman piece. But what about the other cues? Raimi didn’t think “Appreciation” fit in well with what he was going for? And the close-up swing, he went with tracking from the first movie rather than the already-recorded work that Danny wrote, which is absolutely amazing? And “Aunt May Packs” and “The Goblin Returns?” However, at the beginning of the “Making the Amazing” documentary, Sam Raimi says, “I have no idea if it will work. I’m trusting in all my departments…to make it work. Nothing says it’s working.” Right now, it seems to me that Spider-Man 2 was not very organized. But I still have hope for this reason: Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were two years apart. Spider-Man 2 and 3 are three years apart. Now, they’ve given themselves a nice cushion of time to work and make sure that everything is working right, and that’s a great idea. Let’s all hope for the best, shall we?

ParticipantLet’s not make Sam Raimi the bad guy. I think it was probably Sony who treated Danny so poorly. I had a conversation with a producer and co-worker of Sam Raimi, and I asked him if he knew anything of the botched music in Spider-Man 2. He told me that Sony is a very cheap studio in that they’ll pump tons of money into a film if they know it’ll generate a large intake, but they won’t distribute the money evenly for quality on all aspects of the film. I’m guessing that there was some funny business in the music department of Spider-Man 2. I’d hate to think that Sam Raimi, the guy who’s made the coolest movies and made Spider-Man perfect, treated Danny badly on that project. They worked together on Darkman, Army of Darkness, Simple Plan…and he put Danny himself in The Gift! If anything is going on between them, it can’t be worse than Tim and Danny’s squabble after “Nightmare.” I really want Danny to work on future Raimi films. Studios, on the other hand, are often more concerned with money than quality, but that’ how the business works. In my desperation, I can only hope that Danny, Raimi, and Sony all get their issues fixed so that Spider-Man 3 will be nothing short of outstanding.

ParticipantDoesn’t he want to create the music just because it’s friggin Spider-Man?! It’s probably one of the most desireable movies a composer would ever want to do, with all the potential involved. In his DVD interviews, Danny always seemed so enthusiastic about being able to build upon his established themes to create outstanding music. I’m so upset about hearing this because of my emotional attachment to these scores. I first became interested in Danny’s music and film scores in general after hearing the first Spider-Man score. Then when he did Spider-Man 2 and scored it so beautifully, I anticipated hearing his final installment and having some closure with the series (no way he’d do more than 3, right?) My feeling right now is just as Lemony Snicket described it…like walking up a flight of stairs in the dark, and thinking you’re about to go up another step but you’re already at the top, a sickening feeling. I know I sound completely insane and irrational, but I’m really upset about hearing this. If Chris Young delivers a knockout score, sure I’ll be glad, but I’ll still miss the feeling that Danny gives with each of his scores. I just hope he one day returns to action scores. I’m excited for Corpse Bride and Charlie, but I know they’ll be more along the lines of “Nightmare” and “Beetlejuice” in sound, which is good, but I totally love Danny’s action scores and so far there are none on his slate (unless Wilbur Robinson is like that).
As most of you can tell, I’m very saddened by Danny’s decision to leave the franchise. I can only hope that his mind will change…he’s still got about 2 years to do so.

ParticipantNo, I won’t let this happen! It can’t happen! Imagine the Sony and Marvel logos without the high strings! It would be like the Matrix trilogy without their signature brass opening over the WB logo! What are we to do about this? We have to band together and make sure that Spider-Man will always sound like Spider-Man! Come on, look at my username. Would I settle for anything else? I am seriously contemplating whether or not I should go out and see this movie if Danny’s not involved. Either Chris Young would have to deliver a convincing adaptation–not anything but an adaptation–or Sam Raimi must exceed the first two movies combined in greatness. Don’t get me wrong, I love Raimi’s work, but he’s gotta knock me out if he’s gonna go and ditch Danny.
Of course, if this is just a false rumor, I feel like a fool, but know that this is what happens if the score that made me fall in love Danny Elfman’s music is followed up with a replacement.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantAHHHHHHHHHHH
I literally just screamed out loud. The entire Spider-Man experience is ruined for me if Danny is no longer attached. Where’d you find this out, Ryan? It better just be an early, false rumor or else I’m really going to freak out.

ParticipantI like the “This is Halloween” portion, but otherwise the music doesn’t seem to do Danny justice. And yes, the game does look pretty corny, and despite the huge NBC fanbase, I doubt it will sell too well.

ParticipantSomeone’s getting cut off monetarily! Well, that’s not fair, I’m sure he loves his dad’s music. Actually, I didn’t know anything about John Williams’ kids, let alone that this one is a composer himself. He seems really cool about it too, just making the fact that he’s the son of one of the greatest film composers ever kinda subtle. Still, pretty cool that he’s so enthusiastic about Danny’s music. Judging by his filmography, he hasn’t quite reached the level that his father has, but then again I’ve never heard any of his music. Perhaps I have some investigatin’ to do.

ParticipantThanks for the info 9fingered, this is pretty big! I’m really not a fan of ballet, but I’d definitely pay to see hear some new “Edward” material. Think about it. When Danny wrote the score 15 years ago, it was still relatively early on in his career, and it’s still one of his best works. Imagine what he’s able to do now with all this experience under his belt! I wonder if it will be touring?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantHA! Who can’t give Danny street cred now? He’s definitely the most personable composer out there. But poor Oliver…he’s gonna get it now!
Spider-Fan
ParticipantAww, Oliver Elfman. Congrats to him on his son and his orchestra piece! I hope we all get to hear it eventually!
Spider-Fan
ParticipantAre the boards working again?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantYou’re too lucky. You went to the concert and met him and got a picture and got his autograph! The least his loyal but less fortunate followers can get is an album, right?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI found this link on NPR’s website. Aparrently Andy Trudeau’s favorite score is Danny Elfman’s Batman (it’s the first listed in his unnumbered top-ten list, but we all know it’s #1).

ParticipantWell I haven’t heard that one before. Very informative interview, thanks for posting! 1999 seemed to be a very chatty year for Danny. He always seems to get his interviewers to be very relaxed around him. He gives great interviews! Keep em coming!
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI rented the DVD for Danny-ness, and I was unimpressed with the time they gave to Danny in comparision to the time they gave to “Set Me Free.” I’d like to know if Ang Lee talks about Danny, but I’m not buying the DVD or renting it again.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantExcellent stuff–Elfman raw and uncut. When do you think this was recorded? Certainly after 1997 because he mentions Men in Black.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantYeah, it is Bilbo Baggins’s book, but it’s the title Sean Astin used to describe his acting life. The full title is “There and Back Again: An Actor’s Tale.” I actually had wanted to read it and was fortunate enough to get assigned to a biography book in my English class. In the end, I made a totally kick-ass 4-minute Family Guy movie where two of the characters review the book. I’ll try to give it to Mr. Astin and hope he’ll watch it…Oh, how incredibly off-topic.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantThat was a really informative lecture! I loved the Batman 747 story. I know he used the bucket-in-well comparison on the Spider-Man 2 DVD. Also I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard him mention his ex-wife, in a humorous way here.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantThough not quite up to par with seeing Danny Elfman, I jus found out that I’m going to have the chance to meet Sean Astin next month. Not relevant, but very cool nonetheless. Check out his book, “There and Back Again,” it’s really interesting.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI found the story shortly after the movie’s announcement, so I’ve known the story for quite a while now. I wonder if the Jewish aspect will still be there, because the trailer doesn’t show any signs of it.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI don’t know a thing about instruments. But I think Danny has taken a major liking to those bells; I heard them scattered here in there in the Spider-Man 2 score (one prominent one is right before the alley transformation, but it’s in the movie and not on the CD).
I tried to listen to your music but it wouldn’t play…how do I make it work? I’m always interested in hearing work from new composers.
