ParticipantI just hope it’s not another score like “The Kingdom”. That was one of my least favorite Elfman scores.

ParticipantTim Burton was an animator on the “Family Dog” segment of “Amazing Stories” which aired in 1987. Lord, we REALLY need an anthology show of such caliber on TV today, with A-list talent involved just as “Amazing Stories” did. They had people like Spielberg, Scorsese, and Zemeckis directing these things! Ahhh, if only.

ParticipantI thought that Marco Beltrami was his choice composer. Because he was replaced by Elfman on Hellboy 2, does that mean del Toro will never use him again? Or did they have a Raimi/Elfman-style falling out?

ParticipantHeath Ledger just died! Seriously! Poor guy. I wonder if they’d finished filming the movie?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantTotally agreed. When they announced the casting of Ledger, I was highly skeptical. Even some of the early photos of him in character left me unsatisfied. But that trailer, wow! I was not really all that excited for this movie until I saw that thing. Ledger’s Joker looks completely insane in a frightening way, unlike Nicholson’s playfully insane Joker.
I’m really pumped for this movie now, especially with no competition from the Hulk movie yet. But then there’s “Iron Man”… anyway this summer will be fantastic. (to add some Elfman to the topic, he’s scoring two of this summer’s big movies! Yay! And, I can dream, perhaps Hulk too? James Newton Howard managed a bazillion movies all at once!)

ParticipantI re-watched “Batman Returns” last night. Still an amazing movie. But I do sense the tonal differences between the Burton/TAS Batman and the Nolan Batman, and while I still love Elfman’s music a zillion times more, the Zimmer music is really planting itself in the new franchise. It felt especially powerful in the “Dark Knight” trailer when the title came up and the horns blasted the new Batman motif.

ParticipantSomeone on the IMDb forums brazenly claims that John Powell is scoring the film without providing any source for this info. It’s in a topic that lists Danny Elfman and Michael Giacchino as good men for the job (and they’re right!) But isn’t Elfman’s plate a bit full with “Hellboy 2” and “Wanted” both coming out this summer?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantIt works pretty well, though I think the Zimmer music still made for a really intense trailer. Either way, as agreed, this is a fantastic trailer.

ParticipantElfman also apparently scored the Starz logos, which I really like. And if anyone has seen and heard the new Lionsgate logo, it sounds incredibly Elfman-esque.

ParticipantSpeaking of movies released just before New Year’s Day… has anyone noticed that James Newton Howard scored about half of them? The dude scored 4 films released in December! I know it’s slightly off-topic, but I just saw “I Am Legend” and I thought I should mention this fact.

ParticipantNice to see, though there’s pretty much no way Burton’s going to win over the competition this year. It’s sort of the same scenario that every other Oscar nominated movie faced between 2001 and 2003… nothing could compete with Lord of the Rings, and this year it looks like the film to beat is “No Country for Old Men.” Oddly none of the big nominated movies have gotten any of my interest (except for “Juno” and “Charlie Wilson’s War”, which probably and sadly won’t make it to the Oscars), much unlike last year.

ParticipantI hope that it’ll be playing somewhere near me… but I’m in California, it’s bound to be, right? Looks like a really fun film. It’s also to note that the new “Horton Hears a Who” trailer uses some Elfman quite prominently (www.apple.com/trailers)

ParticipantHell yes! I never heard of the book before, but it sounds absolutely awesome, and del Toro sounds perfect for it. And an Elfman score for that? Um, perfect indeed! I’m still really psyched to hear what he comes up with for Hellboy 2… adaptation of Beltrami, or new theme?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI ALWAYS wondered if Spielberg and Burton ever met. Both really are film pioneers and icons.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantBah! The movie’s been pushed back to June 27.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantNo arguments there. Still, “The Rocketeer” is an amazing score in full.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI just uncovered my Horner mix CD… what a great composer, despite that whole stealing other peoples’ music thing. Anyway one listen to “The Rocketeer” makes everything better.

ParticipantElfman’s always talked about his Russian musical influences, so I’ll bet he was pretty interested in working with a Russian director (who’s supposed to be amazing), and probably the same the other way around. But yes, a relief that none of the Media Ventures (or Remote Control Productions, apparently) guys were tagged for this. I hope Elfman never gets sick of writing action scores, as he’s probably one of the best around at writing them.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantVery unexpected, but YAAAAAAY! Nothing beats an Elfman action score (not counting “The Kingdom”). I can’t wait! Thanks for the info!

ParticipantI saw the commercial for the first time and I freaked out with giddiness.

ParticipantBased on my experience with the movie alone, I agree. It’s the reverse with “Meet the Robinsons,” I’ve heard the CD but I still haven’t seen the movie. While I enjoyed parts of the “Meet the Robinsons” score but didn’t love it as a whole, this one bit that wasn’t on the CD is something that I really love — pure Elfman, and pretty much how I had hoped that most of the score would sound like. Yes, I’ve strayed from the topic, but I just totally enjoy this piece of music.
It’s from 0:23 to 0:50:

ParticipantLooks friggin fantastic! However I am a bit on the rocks about Johnny Depp. I feel like this is Jack Sparrow in revenge mode. However, it looks visually stunning, and I’m anxious to hear Johnny Depp sing.

ParticipantI love Heroes, but the music still pisses me off. It’s way too generic, in that they pull out typical instruments for each of the characters’ cultures and do nothing new with them. Plus. for really epic scenes towards the end of last season, nothing really stood out like it should have, I’m not a fan of Wendy and Lisa one bit.

ParticipantIn case anyone would like to check out the main titles…

ParticipantI haven’t heard the score outside of the film, but I just wasn’t really into the guitar tunes played during the lighter moments and in the finale. The one cue that I liked both in the film and alone, which plays on the website, is “The Chase.” It really has a frantic feel to it that matches the intense and uneasy tone of the scene and the whole movie, plus I think it employs the most use of the orchestra. Otherwise, it’s just sound design to me.
